A Rothesay man who was serving on board a Royal Navy ship in Tokyo Bay when Japan’s surrender ended the Second World War has shared his memories of the day with The Buteman.
Gordon Scott, a crew member on HMS Formidable on August 15, 1945, was speaking after a short memorial service at Rothesay’s war memorial to mark the 68th anniversary of the end of the conflict.
“We were stunned that it had finished so abruptly,” Gordon said. “We were expecting the war to go on for a few more months.”
