A Bute sailor’s campaign to gain royal assent for the flying of the Scottish Red Ensign was approved by a parliamentary committee this week.

George McKenzie’s petition will be passed to the Scottish Parliament with a recommendation that it be put into law after a successful meeting of the Parliament’s public petitions committee in Inveraray.

Mr McKenzie, a former lieutenant commander in the Royal Naval Reserve, regularly flies the Scottish Red Ensign from his yacht, Queen B, although he said: “I would stress that my petition was not meant to replace or supersede the British Red Ensign.”
