The Isle of Bute Jazz Festival, which starts today (Friday, May 3), will be welcoming a new face to their programme this year – that of jazz singer Ruth Wilson.
We caught up with Ruth last week to find out more about how she got involved in the jazz scene, her early musical experiences and the upcoming festival here on Bute.
“Jazz is definitely in my blood,” Ruth told us. “My family is incredibly musical, and I had the privilege of having piano lessons from the age of eight. My father is actually a Dixieland jazz musician in Glasgow - Dave Wilson and the Uptown Shufflers is his band.
“I also have a brother who’s a composer, so we were all brought up around my dad’s influence of music. I was listening to a lot of swing music, big band music, traditional jazz, etc., from a very early age.
“I think I’ve always had that kind of swing feel built within me. I didn’t actually start singing jazz until a lot later.”
