A new ‘thrift shop’ is being set up in an empty Rothesay shop unit - with the aim of raising cash for good causes on Bute.
Behind the ‘For Bute’ venture, currently being set up in the former Mackinnon’s jewellery store in the town’s Victoria Street, are Beryl Dooley, Mark Ashcroft and Marlene Hill.
“At the moment we are a thrift shop rather than a charity shop,” Marlene said, “but we will be a charitable trust eventually.
“The first group we’re going to help will be Bute Community Links, who do an enormous amount of good work but haven’t had any funding for well over a year.
“They’re our first priority, but we’ll have a book at the front door of the shop in which people can suggest other local projects for funding in future.”
Beryl, who used to run a greengrocer’s shop in nearby Gallowgate, added: “I always said if I was going to work in a shop again I’d like it to be for the benefit of Bute.”
The team plans to open to the public on Thursday, March 21.
