Straad community to look into buying defibrillator

A public meeting is to take place in one of Bute’s smallest communities later this month to look into raising funds to buy, install and maintain a defibrillator in the area.

Residents at the Straad, on the shores of St Ninian’s Bay, have invited Jennifer McGlashen, a community resuscitation development officer with the Scottish Ambulance Service, to explain more about the possibility of having a public access cardiac defibrillator (PACD) – an electrical device which provides a shock to the heart in the event of a life-threatening arrhythmia such as a heart attack - in their community.

Straad resident Lorna Mitchell attended a recent meeting in Kingarth which was held to look at the possibility of buying at least one, and possibly two, PACDs for Kingarth and Kilchattan Bay.

Said Lorna: “Following on from this, our small community at Straad is now very positive about wanting to find out more and possibly also carry a project forward to raise funds to purchase, install and maintain such equipment.

“Anyone on the island who would like to find out more for themselves is very welcome to attend our meeting.

“When someone suffers a heart attack every minute counts and if you live some distance away from the nearest hospital every second counts.”

The Straad community meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 28 at 7pm in Ballianlay Hall.
