Rothesay couple reflect on 50 years of happy marriage

ROTHESAY couple Alastair and Hazel Macqueen celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with their friends and family this week.
Married by the Rev Hugh Mackinnon at the Rothesay Free Church in the town’s Chapelhill Road on October 17, 1962, Alastair and Hazel were first ‘acquent’ when they worked together in Crawford’s butcher’s in the town – Hazel in the office in the Gallowgate, Alastair in the shops there and in the High Street.
They’ve lived on the island throughout their married lives and are definitely ‘weel kent’ local faces, not least through the butcher’s business in Rothesay’s Bishop Street which Alastair bought from Duncan Currie in 1976 and which still bears his name, though it’s now run by two of the couple’s three sons.
“On the day you’re married you never think you’re going to get to 50 years,” Alastair reflected. “But we’ve worked hard together, and we’ve got a great family.”
