Power back in Rothesay after cut of nearly 2 hours
Electricity supplies have been restored to homes in Rothesay after a power cut of nearly two hours on Friday afternoon.
Supplies were interrupted shortly before 3pm as the bad weather which affected thousands of households across the south-west of Scotland took a turn for the worse.
But engineers from Scottish and Southern Energy were able to switch the town’s ‘juice’ back on at approximately 4.45pm - although supplies had still to be restored to homes at the south end of the island as this updated article was published just after 6pm.
According to national news sources, every home on Arran was left without power, as were large swathes of southern Argyll and Wigtownshire, due to a combination of heavy snow and high winds.
The snowfall on Bute on Friday wasn’t as extreme as in other parts of the country, although more snow fell on the island than had been expected.
An Argyll and Bute Council gritting lorry slipped off the A844 just to the south of the Kingarth war memorial, but was hauled back on to the road by an assisting JCB and driver at around midday. No-one was injured in the incident.
Though several schools in mainland Argyll closed their doors early, none of the schools on Bute were disrupted.
The Rhubodach-Colintraive ferry route was suspended at the start of service on Friday morning, and again in the afternoon, due to high winds, while the A886 Colintraive-Strachur road was closed for a spell in the morning due to a large fallen tree at Dunans.
At the time this article was published the Colintraive ferry remained suspended, with a further review due at 6pm, although CalMac warned customers there was no guarantee of any further sailings on the route.
The snow has, however, begun to take a toll on Bute’s sporting fixture list for the weekend (see separate story for more details).
A yellow ‘be aware’ warning from the Met Office remains in place for Argyll and Bute and most of west central Scotland, although the snow is expected to ease on Bute in the early hours of Saturday.
No further snow is forecast for the island, according to the Met Office’s five-day forecast, although temperatures will remain low, at only one or two degrees above freezing, with the ‘wind chill’ factor expected to make it feel several degrees below zero.
