Bute Museum hosted the local launch of a new book shedding light on many aspects of the history of the island on Saturday.

Historic Bute: Land and People, edited by Anna Ritchie, has been published by the Scottish Society of Northern Studies and is largely based on the lecture programme of a conference held on Bute by the SSNS in the spring of 2010.

Its eleven chapters include studies of the Norse influence in the west of Scotland, agricultural improvement on the island in the 18th century and the Bute Mazer, a medieval drinking vessel prized for its association with King Robert Bruce which is on prominent display in the National Museum of Scotland.

SSNS president John Baldwin said: “The dissemination of research is a key aim of the society, as is collaborating with the communities where we hold our conferences, and we hope Bute will benefit from the publication of this book and that people will be encouraged to go out and find out more about the island.”
