LOCAL firm Bute Fabrics has completed the production of a new tartan specially designed for and by the Society of William Wallace.

Designed by society member Christine MacLeod, the unique single bolt of pure wool fabric, 60 metres in length, will be shared among the members of the society, and will be worn for the first time at the Scottish Parliament on August 11 at a ceremony to commemorate the return of the Letter of Safe Conduct to Scotland.

“All the members of the Society will wear this tartan,” Christine told The Buteman. “It will be a true heirloom.”

Bute Fabrics’ design director Catherine Murray added: “Weaving tartan is quite a new thing for us, but we were very pleased to be given the opportunity to do it.”

Bute Fabrics was chosen to weave the tartan partly because of the expertise of the company’s workforce in Rothesay, partly because Bute is relatively close to Elderslie, and partly because of the link with the Men of Bute, the 1,400 residents of Bute who fought alongside Wallace at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298.
