Tourism summit on Bute is hailed a success

Mount Stuart hosted the 2013 Argyll and the Isles Tourism Summit on Wednesday, March 13.

Mount Stuart hosted the 2013 Argyll and the Isles Tourism Summit on Wednesday, March 13.

The organisers of the Argyll and the Isles Tourism Summit, held on Bute on Wednesday, have hailed the success of the event.

One hundred and forty delegates attended the day-long event at Mount Stuart, organised by the Argyll and the Isles Strategic Tourism Partnership.

The summit, held on the final day of Scottish Tourism Week, heard from Martin Dorchester, the managing director of Caledonian MacBrayne, VisitScotland’s director of partnerships Riddell Graham and Stephen Leckie, the chair of the Scottish Tourism Alliance.

Mike Story, the AISTP’s executive director, told The Buteman: “We’re growing each year and we’re now playing with the big boys - I was at a conference in Edinburgh for Scottish Tourism Week which was attended by 280 people, so to get 140 people to a conference on an island is quite something.

“VisitBute is working closely with the partnership, and Mount Stuart has been heavily involved through Connie Lovel [the Mount Stuart Trust’s chief executive], who is a director, and Donna Chisholm [Mount Stuart’s house and events manager], who is a partner.

“We would like more buy-in from all areas, but it’s up to us to persuade people that the partnership is worth buying into.”
