Work has begun on the refurbishment of Rothesay's post office under the auspices of the local Townscape Heritage Initiative.

Work has begun this week on the latest project in the Rothesay Townscape Heritage Initiative - the refurbishment of Rothesay Post Office.

The revamp will see the entrance to the premises moved from Albert Place to Guildford Square and new windows installed in a traditional Victorian style.

The name of the business will also be changed, to ‘Confectionery and Card Corner’, although all the existing post office functions will be retained.

Richard Harding from Rothesay Post Office said: “Six weeks have been set aside for the work but we reckon it can be done in four. It’s still business as usual while the work is going on.”

The work is being carried out by local firm George Hanson Building Contractors.

The refurbishment is the first shop front repair project to be carried out under the auspices of the THI and follows the award of a £37,057 grant in September 2012.

The shop front itself has already been constructed off-site while investigative works were carried out at the premises.

Lead councillor for Bute and Cowal, Robert Macintyre, said: “The council is delighted to have been able to support the enhancement of this prominent sea front property.

“There is so much work involved in getting these projects on site and it is very rewarding to see this being finished off so beautifully.

“We expect a further eight applications to be submitted over the next few months and some work to start on site over the summer.”
