THI work begins on Castle Street building
Repair work has started on the first building to receive grant funding from Rothesay's Townscape Heritage Initiative. WORK has begun on the first building to benefit from repair work part-funded by Rothesay’s Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).
The building in Castle Street will receive new gutters, downpipes and leadworks, and an adjacent garden wall will be re-pointed, thanks in part to a £14,205 grant from the THI to the building’s owners, local housing association Fyne Homes.
The tender for the work was won by local firm George Hanson Building Contractors, and the work is expected to last for around five weeks.
The next THI-funded project is expected to be the installation of a new shop front at Rothesay Post Office, where the entrance will be moved from Albert Place to Guildford Square.
Repair work under the auspices of the THI must be commissioned by March 31, 2014 and completed by March 31, 2016.
The Rothesay THI, which covers the area bounded by Guildford Square, High Street, Castle Street and Bishop Street and extends from there into East Princes Street, has five separate funding branches: small building repairs (£105,000, less the sum given to Fyne Homes for the Castle Street building repairs), shop front repair and replacement (£239,000), development of the Guildford Square gap site (£250,000), training and education (£91,000) and, most significantly, the repair of five priority historic buildings in Montague Street, Guildford Square and East Princes Street (£1.589 million).
Temporary THI project manager Peter McDonald told Bute Community Council: “These buildings are owned by the people who live in them, but we are not just going to leave them to rot - we will explore every option to see if we can do something about it.
“It’s in everyone’s interests to make sure things are taken forward.”
