Show clash to see Bute school holidays changed?

Bute's young people are heavily involved with the island's agricultural show every summer - but in 2013 the show date clashes with the first day of the new school year.

Argyll and Bute Council is to be asked to look again at Bute’s school holiday dates for 2013-14 after it was realised that the island’s pupils are due to return to their classrooms on the same day as this year’s Bute Agricultural Society show.

The show has historically always taken place on the second Wednesday in August, but after the school holiday dates for 2013-14 were agreed in October it was realised that Wednesday, August 14, 2013 is not just show day, but the first day of the new term for all of Bute’s schools.

Local councillor and farmer Robert Macintyre said: “The dates were passed by the council’s Bute and Cowal area committee in October, but I’ve asked if August 14 could be made an in-service day instead so that at least the pupils can attend the show if they wish.

“The Bute Show is the second biggest one-day event in Bute’s calendar and many pupils are heavily involved in the event, as exhibitors and riders as well as spectators.”

A similar clash at the start of the 2014-15 school year is also set to be re-examined.

The only exception in recent years to the ‘second Wednesday in August’ date for the Bute Show was made in 2006, when the event was brought forward by a week to allow Prince Charles, the Duke of Rothesay, to mark BAS’s bicentenary by attending the show.
