Rothesay THI repairs to start next week
The first set of repair works carried out by Rothesay's Townscape Heritage Initiative will focus on this building at 7 Castle Street.
The first repair works being carried out as part of Rothesay’s Townscape Heritage Initiative are due to get under way this week.
The THI has given £14,205 to local housing association Fyne Homes to install new gutters, new down pipes and new leadworks at 7 Castle Street in Rothesay, and to carry out the re-pointing of an adjacent old garden wall.
Local firm Hanson Building Contractors is due to begin work on the contract on Wednesday, June 27.
The THI’s temporary project officer Peter McDonald revealed the impending start of the first phase of the work in a presentation to Bute’s community councillors this week.
The funds for repair of the Castle Street building, currently occupied by Achievement Bute, Towards Zero Carbon Bute and Bute FM, come from the THI’s small building repair grants fund, which can give assistance for up to 70 per cent of a project’s total costs.
The THI’s other funding pots comprise £239,000 for shop front repair grants, £250,000 towards the development of the Guildford Square gap site, £91,000 for training in historic building maintenance techniques and £1.589 million for the repair of five priority historic buildings in the centre of Rothesay.
Those five buildings are 1-3, 11-13 and 21-27 Montague Street, Guildford Court on the corner of Guildford Square and Albert Place, and Duncan’s Halls – also known as the Palace Buildings – in East Princes Street.
In each case the owners of the properties concerned are required to contribute a proportion of the repair costs, although the THI is able to provide the majority of the funds required.
Mr McDonald – who is providing maternity cover until October – told the community council: “The project is all about trying to bring some of the important buildings in the town centre back to a place where they’re structurally sound and they have a future.
“ If we don’t do something with the money we’ve got now, some of them could end up in a pretty poor condition.”
