Rothesay ‘can learn from Helensburgh experience’

Rothesay should be looking to its Argyll and Bute near-neighbour Helensburgh to see what lessons can be learned from attempts to boost the town’s economy, according to the island’s local development officer.

Helensburgh is the first Scottish town to take part in the ‘Totally Locally’ initiative, a project aiming to persuade people to spend as much of their money as possible in their own communities which is being trialled in 18 towns across the UK.

“We introduced the concept at VisitBute’s networking event in December,” LDO Nina Graham told The Buteman, “and I’m very interested in learning from the Helensburgh experience.

“The people behind Totally Locally have brought out a toolkit taken from the best of their experiences elsewhere, so other towns can introduce it as their own.

“Helensburgh is a CHORD town, the same as Rothesay, and has similar aspects and similar problems to those we face here. There’s nothing they’ve done that we can’t apply in Rothesay.”

Ms Graham also spoke about plans for an open-air market in Rothesay during the Easter holiday weekend, ongoing talks with Caledonian MacBrayne on ferry fare incentives and a programme of free workshops for Bute businesses being run in partnership with Business Gateway.
