Internet station sparks fight for Bute radio loyalties

Plans have been unveiled for a new internet radio station for Bute, Radio Bute - although the team behind the project insist they are not a rival to existing station Bute FM.

Plans have been unveiled for a new internet radio station for Bute, Radio Bute - although the team behind the project insist they are not a rival to existing station Bute FM.

THE battle for the loyalties of Bute’s radio listeners is set to take a new twist with the launch of an internet station for the island - although the team behind the new venture have insisted they are not a rival to existing station Bute FM.

The forthcoming launch of Radio Bute was revealed at the AGM of Bute Community Land Company, whose subsidiary, Brandish Bute, will provide premises for the new operation at its shop in Rothesay’s East Princes Street.

Brandish Bute director Peter Vincent told the meeting he had been holding discussions with “a group of broadcasters originally involved with Bute FM”, who had reached an agreement with Brandish Bute for the rental of space at the rear of the shop.

Graham Leonard from Radio Bute told The Buteman: “We’re not a rival to Bute FM – we’re an alternative.

“The majority of the Radio Bute committee felt Bute FM were missing out on the community side of things, and that’s where we’re going to be different.

“The response from the public to what we’re doing has been pretty overwhelming. They’re coming forward with offers of money and help, and they want to see it succeed.”

Bute FM said in a statement: “We are aware of the existence of a Facebook page called ‘Radio Bute’ and of their intention to launch an online radio station.

“Competition often leads to improved output all round, and so we wish them the very best of luck in their endeavours.

“We are also aware of other online broadcasters based in the surrounding area, and are sure that the online audience will appreciate having Radio Bute as one more option in their worldwide choice of broadcasters.”
