Hunterston U-turn ‘fantastic news for Bute’

THE man who has led opposition on Bute to proposals for a massive new coal-fired power station at Hunterston has hailed the decision to drop the plans as “fantastic news” for the island’s economy.

Kingarth resident David Brown – whose home at the Wee Bay faces directly towards the site earmarked for the development – said Ayrshire Power Ltd’s proposals were “flawed and ill-judged”.

The company announced earlier this week that it was dropping plans to build a new power station, using experimental ‘carbon capture and storage’ technology, because of the current state of the economy and uncertainty over the financing of the project.

“It’s fantastic news that 22,000 people cannot be wrong,” Mr Brown said, “and that the flawed and ill-judged plans to build a coal-fired power station at Hunterston have been officially dropped.

“From a Bute perspective, and more specifically a Kingarth and Kilchattan Bay one, this decision not to proceed with a vast industrial complex and near-six-hundred-foot chimney on a site of special scientific interest ensures that visitors’ views are not blighted and our fragile tourist economy is not further endangered.”
