A PLANNING application for the conversion of the former St Ninian’s Church in Port Bannatyne to eight flats has been submitted to Argyll and Bute Council.

The B-listed building – which held its last service in March of 2006 – was sold on the open market seven years after the congregation chose to unite with the churches of Ascog, St Brendan’s, High Kirk, Kingarth and Kilchattan Bay to form The United Church of Bute.

At the time of going to print, there was only one objector listed on the council’s planning website, Mr Tony Burns of Ardbeg, who has objected to the proposal to put car parking spaces in front of the building’s front door

Port Bannatyne community councillor Donnie MacLeod said: “If the aesthetics of the front of the building are of a concern to Mr Burns, he certainly won’t like the look of it if it’s left to rot like the West Church.

“I am absolutely certain that Bute Community Council will give the plans their support, and I would encourage those who’d like to see this beautiful building enhanced to do the same.”
