CHORD chair ‘delighted’ at Rothesay progress
The chairman of the Rothesay ‘CHORD’ project board, charged with overseeing the regeneration of the town’s waterfront area, says he is “delighted” with the progress being made – despite what might look like a lack of visual evidence to support his optimism.
Councillor Robert Macintyre was speaking after the latest meeting of the Rothesay board – one of five CHORD project boards across Argyll and Bute, CHORD standing for the five towns involved (Campbeltown, Helensburgh, Oban, Rothesay and Dunoon) – heard that the result of a significant funding application for the redevelopment of Rothesay Pavilion was due by the end of September.
The board also heard an update on work being carried out by the Rothesay Townscape Heritage Initiative in repairing buildings at the east end of the town centre.
Councillor Macintyre, who took over the chairmanship of the Rothesay board after May’s local government elections, said: “I am delighted about the great progress being made by the Townscape Heritage Initiative and the Pavilion projects in Rothesay.
“The Townscape Heritage Initiative has progressed extremely well since the beginning of the year. There have been small repair grants awarded to two properties, condition surveys completed on a further two properties, and the board has approved new grants to Rothesay post office and 21-27 Montague Street.
“I am also very pleased that proposals are being progressed for work to seven shop fronts, all THI properties.”
Work on the first THI project, repairs to the building in Castle Street occupied by Achievement Bute, Towards Zero Carbon Bute and Bute FM, is nearing completion.
“We are awaiting the results of two significant funding applications to support the redevelopment of Rothesay Pavilion,” Cllr Macintyre continued, “one of which was expected at the end of September and another which is due at the beginning of November.
“There was a discussion about the need for the establishment of a new group to take the Pavilion forward, and also the appointment of a high profile ‘champion’ to promote the project.
“A further meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, where reports will be submitted recommending the steps that will need to be taken both to establish the new group and to appoint a champion, once the results of the two grant applications are known.”
