Caledonian MacBrayne has been named ‘Best Ferry Company’ in the prestigious Guardian and Observer Travel Awards for the third year in a row.

CalMac beat 15 other ferry operators nominated by readers, who were asked to identify companies who “made their holidays” through good service.

CalMac managing director Martin Dorchester said: ”Winning this award in 2010 and 2011 was a great achievement but securing a ‘hat trick’ is the icing on the cake.

“These awards are a recognition of the work our staff do every day to give customers the best service they can and it is great to know it is appreciated.”

The award ceremony was held in the historic opera house in Ghent, Belgium, last Friday, and was hosted by Mariella Frostrup.

Mr Dorchester added: “We particularly enjoyed the commentary published on the award website which compared CalMac to singer Bryan Ferry saying we were “almost as sexy and stylish” as the Roxy Music frontman.

“We are used to receiving comments from a host of sources but they are rarely as flattering or colourful.”
