Bute website is up for sale - for £1,000

A BUTE website set up by a former island resident is up for sale – for £1,000.

Councillor Isobel Strong told Bute Community Council this week that Darrell Wood, who was Argyll and Bute Council’s Bute development officer until he and his wife Cheryl left the island in 2007, had set up www.ButeGateway.org as an ‘encyclopedia’ of facts about Bute, including the island’s archaeology, history, housing and quality of life, among other tourism highlights.

“Given that he hasn’t been on the island for a number of years, he feels he can’t keep maintaining the website,” Cllr Strong said.

“It seems a valuable resource and he’s wondering if anyone would be willing to take it on.”

BCC’s secretary Peter Wallace said Bute Gateway is always one of the top results in web searches for ‘Isle of Bute’, and that it still receives a large number of hits every year.

Community councillor Nicola Jones told the meeting she felt the website should be offered to VisitBute, adding that if the information contained on it is as valuable as has been stated, then it should be retained.

Mike Blair commented that the world has moved on quickly in terms of technology, adding that the cost of the site shouldn’t be any more than the cost of the domain name.

Peter Wallace agreed to write to Leo Plaster, the tourism officer for the island, to find out VisitBute’s position as to whether they would be willing to take on the website.
