Bute’s strong equine display at Royal Highland Show

BUTE exhibitors shone in both the heavy and light horse sections of the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh.

Clydesdale breeder John McMillan of Greenan Mill won the prize for champion gelding in the heavy horse section with Mill Jake, having earlier won the first prize in the four-year-old or over gelding class with the same horse.

The Greenan Mill prize haul also included second place in the four-year-old or over yeld mare class with Mill Lady Di, along with three prizes in the heavy horse turnout section – second in the four-horse team class with Jake, Ivy, Lady Di and Miss Ellie, third place in the pairs class of the same section with Lady Di and Jake, and and fourth in the tandem class with Jake and Ivy.

Meanwhile, Tom McMillan of Eskechraggan won the prizes for the breeder of the best colt, and for the best male Clydesdale bred by its exhibitor, with Eskechraggan Ernest, who had earlier won third place in the yearling colt class.

In the light horse classes Laura McArthur of Ardbrannan Riding Centre took two of her horses to Ingliston, and won second place in the novice riding horse class and fourth in the intermediate show pony category with six-year-old Westmore Destiny.

There was also a notable performance by Alan Ewing from Rothesay, who won the exercise class in the private driving section with Stonedge Ser-y-Bore, a four-year-old Welsh Section A pony bred at the Stonedge stud farm in Hawick, and broken in for driving only in March by former Rothesay resident Ken Ruthven at his carriage driving centre at Boreland, near Lockerbie.
