Bute’s MP welcomes OFT road fuel probe
Argyll and Bute MP Alan Reid has welcomed news of an investigation by the Office of Fair Trading into the high price of petrol and diesel at the country’s filling stations.
The OFT launched a ‘call for information’ last week in a bid to find out how much substance there is to claims about the way the road fuel sector in the UK works.
Its investigation will look at whether reductions in crude oil prices are reflected at the pumps, the competition (or lack of it) between fuel retailers in remote areas, and whether supermarkets and major oil companies are squeezing out smaller independent retailers.
Mr Reid said: “I have often raised in Parliament the problems being caused by the high price of petrol and diesel in Argyll & Bute and welcome this investigation.
“Any excessive profiteering in the supply chain has to be stopped. I hope the OFT will investigate in particular why the price of fuel at the pumps is so much higher on the islands and the Kintyre peninsula than it is in the rest of the country.”
The results of the OFT’s investigation, and possible future steps, are expected to be made public in January.
