The prospects look bleak for a shop in Rothesay set up to market and sell local arts and crafts after a group looking into taking on the premises decided not to pursue the matter further.

The Brandish Bute shop in East Princes Street now looks unlikely to reopen as a retail premises after the Isle of Bute Artists’ Collective (IBAC) decided they would be unable to make a success of running the shop as a co-operative.

One of the group’s members, artisan woodworker Ray Beverley, said: “We had a meeting on Monday night, and basically decided that taking over the shop is a no-goer.

“We looked at the figures, and from our point of view it just wasn’t going to work.”

Brandish Bute director Peter Vincent said he was still hopeful of IBAC taking on the running of the Brandish Bute website.

“The best solution I can see at the moment is that the artists themselves keep the website going,” Mr Vincent told The Buteman.

“As far as the shop goes, we have stopped trading as of last month. Nobody is owed any money, and no-one is out of pocket apart from John McGhee [the former chairman of Brandish Bute’s parent, the BUte Community Land Company], Sara Goss-Melvin [the other Brandish Bute director] and myself.”
