Ascog wind farm application ‘due in next month’

A PLANNING application for the erection of three wind turbines at Ascog Farm is expected to be submitted in the next month.

Developer Adrian Tear told The Buteman of his intention in the week that Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson spoke against the proposal after being contacted by constituents opposed to the turbines.

Mr Stevenson, the only Conservative among the six Scotland representatives in the European Parliament, said the turbines would do nothing to reduce carbon emissions or to halt climate change - and accused Mr Tear of “scaremongering” by warning of the threat to the island from melting polar ice caps in his presentation to Bute Community Council last September.

“Mr Tear’s three turbines will do nothing more than despoil the landscape and reduce the value of local land,” Mr Stevenson said.Mr Tear told The Buteman he had recently sent back comments on a first draft of the environmental impact statement on the turbines, prepared by the Scottish Agricultural College.

“I’m hoping that the planning application, with supporting documents, will go to the council in the next month or so,” he said.

“According to the first draft of the environmental statement, the environmental impact of the turbines is very low or non-existent. The biggest impact, as you would expect, is on the landscape.”

Mr Tear declined to give any further detail on the draft statement’s assessment of the turbines’ visual impact, but said: “A wind farm is what a wind farm is. Some people like them, others hate them, and I suspect all those who don’t will try and make a disproportionate amount of noise about it.”
