SIXTY years perfecting the art of public speaking on Bute have been celebrated at a gala luncheon to mark the diamond anniversary of the Isle of Bute Speakers Club.
Entertainer Johnny Beattie – for whom 2012 is also a special date, marking his own 60th year in showbusiness – and Mount Stuart Trust chief executive Connie Lovel were the guest speakers at the event, which was held at the Kingarth Hotel and was attended, appropriately, by 60 guests.
Joining the two guest speakers at the top table were IBSC president Ian Carmichael, Chris Robertson, district president of the Association of Speakers Clubs, and Betty Norris-Smith, who began proceedings by saying grace, while the 60 guests included visitors from as far afield as Cockermouth in Cumbria.
