Restaurant conversion bid for former Rothesay pub

Planning permission has been sought to turn the former Brandane Bar into a licensed restaurant and to refurbish the shop front - the latter in conjunction with the Rothesay Townscape Heritage Initiative.

Planning permission is being sought to convert an empty public house in Rothesay town centre into a licensed restaurant.

Paul Melvin of The Boat House in Battery Place is seeking permission to alter, extend and change the use of the former Brandane Bar at 23-25 High Street, last used as a pub in 2011, and to refurbish the frontage of the same premises.

The proposal specifies that the windows, materials, colours and glazing details and depth at the front of the property will be specified by the Rothesay Townscape Heritage Initiative’s architects, in consultation with Argyll and Bute Council planning officer Steven Gove, owing to the THI’s financial contribution to the upgrading of the shop front.

Argyll and Bute Council’s roads department has made no objection to the proposal, but the authority’s built heritage conservation officer, Lynne Robertson, while observing that “the current submission has made a positive step in the right direction”, has raised some concerns over the detail of the application, particularly relating to the finishes to the front of the premises.

No comments from members of the public on the application have yet been published on the council’s website; the formal closing date for representations is Friday, March 15.
