No change to fire cover on Bute, says commander

Area commander Paul Connelly and station officer Roddie Shaw present a certificate to Graeme Connor, who retired in January after 36 years as a retarned firefighter on Bute.

The man in charge of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue in Argyll and Bute says the public on the island should notice no change when a new Scotland-wide fire service takes over at the start of next month.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue will be replaced by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service from April 1, but area commander Paul Connelly says the change should not result in any discerible difference to the service provided on Bute.

“Our basic message is ‘keep calm and carry on’,” Mr Connelly said during a visit to Rothesay this week.

“There will be no change on the ground that people will see, and no change to the way we do our business.

“I’d like to think people in this community feel protected by the service they have today, and that will continue to be the case from April 1.”

Mr Connelly was on Bute to make a presentation to Graeme Connor, who retired in January after 36 years as a retained firefighter based in Rothesay.

“Graeme’s certificate will be one of the last ones, if not the last, presented with a Strathclyde Fire and Rescue badge on it,” Mr Connelly continued.

“His record speaks of a fantastic level of commitment to the service and the community.”
