Argyll College holds Rothesay open day

Staff and potential students at Argyll College's Rothesay learning centre open day.

Staff and potential students at Argyll College's Rothesay learning centre open day.

EARLY education and childcare, hairdressing, health and social care, construction and agricultural skills and even natural horsemanship are among the subjects which will be available to students at Argyll College’s Rothesay learning centre during the 2012-13 academic year.

Staff at the centre opened their doors to the public this week at an information day to highlight the range of further education options available locally to both school leavers and adult learners.

Hairdressing students will benefit from the use of the salon at Rothesay Joint Campus which is to be fully renovated over the summer holiday’s with all the facilities of a working salon.

The SVQ hairdressing course is just one of many Argyll College courses which are vocational in nature, preparing students for the world of work or enabling them to achieve a recognised professional qualification.

Among the latter is the health and social care SVQ, taught by Allan MacDougall, who told us: “All care workers, support workers and support assistants will require to be registered with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) by 2014, and our course will give people the qualification they need in order to be registered.

“We’re also going to be supporting a Scottish Government initiative called Promoting Excellence, and will be promoting professional development awards in dementia and administering medication as part of that.

“We recognise that care workers aren’t always the best paid employees in the world, but there are a variety of options if candidates feel they can’t afford the fees up front, and I would advise anyone who feels they would benefit from any of Argyll College’s courses to contact us to find out more.”

For more information on fee options for any Argyll College course, and on all the courses available at the Rothesay learning centre, contact centre manager Linda McLaughlan on (01700) 501000, email linda.mclaughlan@argyllcollege.ac.uk or via the ‘Argyll College Rothesay’ page on Facebook.
