An appeal from Ohio: looking for the Dochertys of Rothesay
THE Buteman has been contacted by a reader from the USA hoping we can put her in touch with members of her family who may still live in Rothesay.
Debbie Jones’ grandmother and great-aunt, Elizabeth and Margaret Docherty, left Bute in approximately 1923 for a new life in the US.
Debbie now lives in Mayfield Heights, Ohio – but her 22-year-old son, currently serving in the US Air Force, is travelling in Europe and hopes to visit the west of Scotland in the next few days, and Debbie is hoping that someone on Bute might read this appeal and perhaps put her son in touch with any living family members on Bute.
Elizabeth (who might have been known as Bet or Beth) and Margaret (known as Peggy) were two of four Docherty sisters – the oldest was Marion, who had a son named Billy who later worked for The Times, and the youngest was Agnes, known as Bunty, who married a man named Archie.
There were also three Docherty brothers, two of whom were John and James.
The children’s mother had the maiden name Gibson, and their father, either John or James, was a local fisherman who repaired boats during the winter.
Elizabeth and Margaret returned to Bute for a visit in the mid-1960s, at which time a daughter or niece of one of the Docherty brothers was married to the island’s only undertaker.
At the same time a male family member, whose first name may have been Gordon, was in the Black Watch in the mid-1960s; there was also a female member of the family, Mary (surname unknown), who sang in a local pub around the same time.
Does any of the family information above ring a bell with you? If so, call our office on (01700) 502503, email news@buteman.com or send us a message on Facebook – and if we hear from you in time we’ll pass the information on to Debbie or her son.
