A fascinating look into Bute’s history
AN ACTION-PACKED programme is on offer this weekend as the Discover Bute Landscape Partnership Scheme hosts a free event taking people on a journey through Bute’s history, writes Angela Haggerty.
Ranging from academic talks at Bute Museum to interactive storytelling and ‘big guys with drums’ - that’s Clann an Drumma, last seen on the island at last year’s eatBute festival - there’s something for everyone on Bute to get involved with.
Paul Duffy, Discover Bute’s deputy project manager for archaeology, said of the weekend’s programme: “There was a plan at the very start of the Discover Bute scheme to hold a conference at the end.
“I had taken the decision towards the end of last year that I wanted to make it more than an academic conference. That is still there but I wanted to create something everyone could get something from.”
From 9.30am-3.30pm on Saturday there will be a series of expert talks at Bute Museum, covering subjects from paleoenvironmental history of Bute to the architectural legacy of the Earls and Marquesses of Bute, aspects of the island in the 1930s and a report on the community archaeology on Bute that has been running over the last three years.
Rothesay Castle will host family-friendly activities including an all-day drop in session of painting, making, sticking, pottery and glueing for kids.
“We’ll have a Viking re-enactment group at the castle,” Paul continued, “displaying weapons and showing how Vikings lived.
“I’m also delighted we are working again with Achievement Bute. We are doing an interactive story with them about the Bute Mazer - a drinking cup and an internationally significant piece.”

The family event at Rothesay Castle begins at 11am with a parade at 3.30pm.
Sunday features three separate walks - one to St Blane’s Chapel, one of Rothesay town and one looking at the island’s historic woodlands.
